There are two basic types of label adhesive divided by its nature, they are permanent adhesive and removable adhesive. Each type of adhesive can be made from a variety of materials; which material to choose depends on the surface being labeled, the conditions the label will have to endure, and the required longevity of the label and its purposes.

If a adhesive label will have to be exposed to a very moist environment, such as a freezer, refrigerator or cooler, water-based adhesives are not practical since they are very easy to be broken down and the labels can peel off from the products, regardless of the surface to which they are applied. Therefore water-based adhesives should only be used in dry environments.
